The 5 'Whys' Framework You Must Use to Understand Your Purpose

If you haven't asked yourself why you do what you do x5, you don't know your purpose.

How will your customers know what you do if you don't really know yourself? Let me explain.

You need to know who your customers are & what they want before you serve them. They need to match your purpose (not the other way around).

As Simon Sinek says, 'People don't buy what you do, they buy WHY you do what you do'. He explains his 'Why' framework in his classic TED Talk HERE.

Why 5 Whys?

The '5 WHYS' framework is a problem solving technique to gradually get to the root cause of an issue. But it's perfect for working out your true purpose.

EXAMPLE

What you do: I run my own Bakery.

  1. Why? I enjoy baking for people

  2. Why? It makes me feel good

  3. Why? I like to see the joy the food I've made brings to others

  4. Why? Because good food brings people together.

  5. Why? It gives me pride connecting people through their enjoyment of my food.

You don't just bake. You connect people through freshly baked food. Now that's a bakery I want to visit!

In this example, your target customer enjoys connecting over food. This must be the theme of your bakery, your message & your story.

Let me warn you...

This deep dive will be truly eye-opening.

You can finally understand why you do what you do. It draws out your target audience - people you believe the same as you. You can tell your story to all the customers who speak your language. It's your purpose.

That's Just the Start of Your Story

So you've asked yourself 'why?' 5x & cracked story, purpose & target audience all in one hit. Easy right?

Well...not quite. Here's why....

ree

Finding your purpose is just the start & isn't meant to be easy. Simon Sinek also wrote the essential book 'Start With Why' just about finding your purpose.

I'll bring you more exercises & ideas, but this is the place to start.

It won't be easy, but keep at it & you'll have more clarity & ability to tell your story then ever before.

Thanks for reading, Chris
