A friend calls himself an idiot & a blog is born

When I tell someone I'm a copywriter, you can probably guess what their 1st question is...(the clue's in the title!)

Not understanding what something means, doesn't make you an idiot.

Let me explain why this is important.

We all self-consciously worry that if we don't understand something, we must be stupid (might be a British thing).

When the mechanic tells you what's wrong with the car, you just nod along pretending that of course you completely understand the basic intricacies of a car engine!

But the expert should know the details, not you.

A Friend in Need

So when my friend asked me to explain copywriting 'like he was an idiot', I instantly wondered why he felt that way. Why should he have any idea what copywriting is?

Copy is ultimately any writing you or your organisation puts out to your customers. Everyday, everything you write is copy. Including:

  • Your Website

  • Emails

  • Brochures/Marketing info

  • Newsletters

  • Job Specifications

  • Handbooks

  • Processes

  • Social Media Posts

And anything else you write.

(sidenote - there is a difference between COPYWRITING & CONTENT WRITING which I'll cover in a separate blog).

If you run a business, copywriting is something you do without knowing it's copywriting.

And there's the problem...

If you don't know you're doing it, how do you know if what you're producing is any good?

A copywriter purposefully creates writing that ensures your company or organisation's message & vision are threaded through everything you release to your customers.

This means reaching & resonating with your target audience.

So...What Are Your Options?

You have 2 options:

  1. GET GOOD AT COPYWRITING - you can learn & get better over time. It's always worth getting an idea at least of what good copy is. It's part of your self-development but it's also time consuming (booo!) & takes you away from working in your business.

  2. GET SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU - you use an accountant for your accountants, a solicitor for your contracts & IT Support for your computers...so why wouldn't you bring in a writer for your writing? Good business leadership starts with delegating the jobs that need doing out to the pros. If you want to get your writing done well, you need a copywriter.

And yes, I suppose there's a 3rd option - do nothing & continue being stressed out, not knowing what to write!

If you'd like to take option 1 or 2, get in touch.

If you're sticking with option 3...God speed!

Thanks for reading,

Chris.
